Dying For Movies Part Four

After watching today's movie, Reincarnation (or Rinne as it is also known as), I started reading other reviews. I don't do this in order to copy from them. But I do like to see what other people thought. I want to see where I stand, compared to other people that watched the same film. I have already made up my mind what rating I will give, and the other reviews won't change my mind on that. A big thread in these movie reviews, the After Dark Horrorfest, is that people were looking for something too graphic or too scary for the general public, and didn't walk away with that feeling. While I admit the advertising was part of why I wanted to see these films, I didn't truly believe that they would be what the advertising proclaimed them to be. All I'm doing, as well as anyone that is watching these films, is going into each movie hoping to be entertained and possibly, just possibly, be scared by them. It's all I'm asking from a movie, and all that anyone should be asking for.

Reincarnation is a little hard to explain without giving too much of it away. So I will do my best not to spoil anything. Whatever you do, don't read the plot summary on IMDb, because it gives everything away. Ikuo Matsumura (Kippei Shiina) is going to make a horror film based on an actual event. Thirty some years ago, a professor killed 11 people in a hotel. This included the staff, the guests, himself and perhaps worst of all, his two kids. Nagisa Sugiura (Yuka) is trying out for one of the parts and gets it. Before this though, she starts to see a strange little girl holding a very weird looking doll. At one point, the director takes the entire cast and some of his crew to the actual hotel where the murders took place. It has been closed up for some time now and is a bit run down. Matsumura wants the cast to try and feel what the people they are playing went through. During this time Nagisa starts to see strange things, and feels like she is reliving the memories of this event that are now inside of her. What could all this mean?

Reincarnation starts off like a ghost story, at least that is what it reminded me of. But it turns into something much more than that. There is very little blood to be found, but this film doesn't need it. It is a ghost story but with a twist. Many have compared it to The Shining. I will admit that it does remind me of that movie a little bit. But it is different enough to where I think they were paying homage to it, instead of trying to rip off the story. The title of the movie gives some of the plot away. It deals a little bit with reincarnation.

From start to finish, Reincarnation kept me pretty much glued to the screen. Like most J-horror films, a big part of the film is nothing more than the set up for the end of the film. You are probably saying to yourself "but Heather, all movies are like that." Am I right? Most J-horror movies seem to be throw backs to some of my favorite older horror movies made here. By that I mean that there is a slow build up, with maybe a few things happening before the big finish. Of course, not everyone likes slow builds. This was only part of the reason I loved this one. The story itself was interesting. Trying to figure out what is happening, what the ghosts want is another reason. I found this to be a very thoughtful movie.

Does Reincarnation have its faults? Of course it does. No movie is perfect after all. The ending left at least one question in my mind that could have been easily explained, if they had wanted to do so. It's not a big complaint, but it would have been nice if they had tied up some of the loose ends. Also, the creepy doll comes to life at one point and walks. To some it was laughable. I can't say that it made me laugh, but it could have looked better than it did. Some people didn't care for the making a film within a film. It gave them that "been there done that" feel. I rather liked that myself, and it's not like the whole haunted hotel thing has never been done before either.

This one really worked for me. It had me wondering what was going to happen next. It made me try and figure out what was going on. I was also trying to figure out what the twists were going to be before they happened. I can't say I that I managed to do that, but it was fun all the same! This one is subtitled so I will warn you about that. At times, it goes up and off again a little too fast. Because of the slow build up and the events that take place in the movie, this one went by quicker than I had thought. I felt very tense at times and yes I have to say it, even a bit scared as things really got going. It has been a long time since I have done this, close to a year I believe, but it has to be done. This is not the first to get this rating, but it is the first movie not made here in America to get it. If you get any of these films (even though I'm not done watching them all as of this writing) get this one, it is well worth it.
5 out of 5 Glad I never had a doll like the one in this movie

Oh wow Miss Heather a 5er, I love it (grinning). For you to say a movie got you a bit scared, to me is like saying that heart surgery can be a "bit dangerous at times", lol. That is really saying something to me sweet lady, so I do look forward to watching this one.

You sort of got me started on J horrors anyway. Since then I have been looking for them on cable and watch/tape them to watch later when I will not be available. Maybe I have this one confused with another one in part, but it does sound familiar at least in part. I don't recall the doll walking, so I must have it confused I reckon.

But I may just have to watch this one first when my dvds show up, hehehe. Sort of reminds me of reading your reviews - I might as well start with the best (tips my hat). But since we do usually share very similar tastes in what we enjoy in horrors, I am looking forward to this one Miss Heather. Maybe it will give me a chill or two - about the best I can hope for these days, and maybe not. But either way it will be a great watch from your description. Like you I don't really mind slow flicks - as long as they give me the payoff anyway. It sounds like you felt you got more than your money's worth from this one, so who could ask for more than that in my view.

Another great review Miss Heather, but your fans have simply come to expect nothing less than that from you too. So all your fault I reckon maam.

I do look forward to your other reviews from this series, and then of course the big 200th post. That is still a bit hard for me to accept, but I do look forward to it anyway pretty lady. So when you have the time, please remember to feed the bears, hehehehe (tips my hat).

Okay.
I'll be upfront about this.
I'm not going to read this review.
Well, not yet.
Since it's J-horror and comes with a 5 star rating as well (holy crap!), I'm going to employ my traditional method of not reading anything about a movie I'm planning to see (for the most part that's my method)(as for the other part of the method, I SAY I'm going to see the movie, and then I lame-ass out and never get around to it)(but I saw THE HOST on Sunday --the Korean monster movie- and at a theater, no less! So, anything's possible!)
Hopefully, I'll check this out soon...

Oh, and the reason I make a point about it being J-horror: usually they're more atmosphere oriented, and I think the less you know about it going in the better, hence...

Well little lady, you did nail this one Miss Heather. I decided to cheat a bit though. Rather than watching it first I saved it for the last. To be honest I am glad that I did.

Like you this movie just worked for me very well. At times it can be a pain to have to deal with the subtitles, but either I was too involved in this one, or the dialogue reduced as the tension increased - or both. I did not mind the subtitles. It would have been great if the dialog had been available in English as well. But with my hearing as it is, I will often use a headset and turn on the English close captioning option, so I will not miss something important if whispered or said softly as an aside. That may be another reason the subtitles did not really bother me, as I used them for all the movies in this series anyway.

I personally think you did a great job of discussing this one without giving anything important away too smart lady, hehehe. I started out liking the opening, but initially could not really see the relevance of showing the truck driver. Then it became more clear as the flick progressed. Like you I enjoyed the movie within a movie, it just worked for me. At least the way it was handled in this movie worked for me, so maybe the director and writer deserve some credit for that part too.

I would not argue with your rating at all Miss Heather. I was hoping for at least a shiver or two, but oh well, lol. I am what you might call "hard core" as a sick puppy and it takes a lot to even make me shiver these days. I can not recall the last time a horror flick actually scared me. The last shiver I can readily recall was Dead End (smiling, I still watch that one at least a couple of times a year).

You noted you were glad you never owned a doll like that one. The only dolls I have ever been into were the live ones. But shucks Miss Heather, I am glad I never knew a lady with a doll like that one now. Great review Miss Heather. I did find myself trying to guess the twists before they happened. Sometimes I did, sometimes I did not. I did guess the last two correctly except I switched the characters up - you will understand what i mean by that, hehehe.

I have to agree with your overall assessment of this series too Miss Heather. While it would have been great if these had been so over the top they would never be shown to the general public, I simply took that as a marketing ploy. But that being said, I would also admit, I did think most in this series were done well, and some very well. No shivers for me in this series, but some smiles and "nicely done" once or twice, which is almost as good for me these days. Thank you for reviewing them and making me aware of the best place to order my set pretty lady. I will enjoy watching these movies again in a bit, when I can not recall the next line said of the next event as clearly (smiing, tip my hat).
